In case you haven't noticed, I am a big fan of reality TV. Yes, I know it's ridiculous and it will most likely be the destructive downfall of our civilization, but it's just so fun to watch! Plus, in my defense, I prefer reality competition shows over disgusting dreck like The Hills or Bad Girls Club.
So just imagine my glee as Barney Stinson ran down a list of reality competition elimination catchphrases on this week's How I Met Your Mother. These catchphrases are now something of a rite of passage for these shows—I always look forward to the premieres of new competition shows so I can see what "clever" phrase they came up with. One of the worst ever? Season 1 of The Fashion Show when the eliminated designer was told "We're just not buying it" and the safe designer told "You're still in the competition, but you're hanging by a thread." Ugh.
CBS didn't post a separate clip of the scene and I try to avoid posting YouTube videos of people filming their screens, but thankfully PopWrap posted the video themselves. Check it out:
And in case you missed it all, here's a transcript for ya:
"You are the weakest link, goodbye. Punchy, the tribe has spoken. Please pack up your knives and go. Your work of art didn't work for us. Your time's up. I have to ask you to leave the mansion. You must leave the chateau. Your tour ends here. You've been chopped. You've been evicted from the Big Brother house. Your dessert just didn't measure up. Sashay away. Give me your jacket and leave Hell's Kitchen. I'm sorry, you did not get a rose. You have been eliminated from the race. You are no longer in the running to be America's Next Top Model. You're fired. Auf Wiedersehen."
So, to review, those are catchphrases from: The Weakest Link, Survivor, Top Chef, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, Flavor of Love, Beauty and the Geek, Joe Millionaire, Chopped, Big Brother, Top Chef: Just Desserts, RuPaul's Drag Race, Hell's Kitchen, The Bachelor, The Amazing Race, America's Next Top Model, The Apprentice and Project Runway. Phew.
My favorites were of course Project Runway, ANTM, The Amazing Race (he pretty much nailed Phil's accent) and the pitch-perfect delivery of "Sashay away" from RuPaul's Drag Race. I have to guess that last one was NPH's favorite to do.
One complaint: why didn't they include the brilliant "See you later, decorator" from Top Design?!?!
Special thanks to Please Welcome Your Judges intern Christopher J. Smedick for researching the transcript.
