American Idol Returns Tonight, But Will I?

Strap in, everyone. After the brutal departure of Simon Cowell, the announcement of a lower eligibility age, format changes, judge changes and a slew of heart-warming promos designed to make us forget the snooze-fest that was Season 9, American Idol Season 10 premieres tonight.

But will I be tuning in?

It's a tough question, and one I'm not even sure I know the answer to.

The truth is, I cannot fathom the idea of sitting through another batch of contestants the likes of Michael Lynche, Tim Urban, Didi Benami, Andrew Garcia or Katie Stevens. I just can't do it. Last season, the only glimmer of hope we had was Crystal Bowersox, who ended up being shut out by scruffy-voiced paint salesman Lee Dwyze... ugh. Add to that the long episodes and the aforementioned lack of Simon, and the thought of another Idol season exhausts me.

But then again... I'm encouraged by the new format, Jennifer Lopez as a judge, Randy stepping up his game and the lack of idiotic Seacrest-Cowell banter. I want to believe that Steven Tyler and Lopez will bring a fresh voice to the show and that the return of Nigel Lythgoe as an executive producer means a return to the glory days.

And, of course, there are those moments like the one below when an undiscovered talent truly wows us makes it all worth it....

Now, let's be clear. With the packed Thursday line-up of comedy coming up on NBC (more on that tomorrow), there's no way I'll be tuning in to see the Thursday results show live. And you'd better believe I won't be missing Modern Family or Cougar Town on Wednesdays. But maybe, just maybe, my DVR and I will be having a date late every Wednesday night or early every Thursday morning to see just how this 10th season of American Idol turns out.

What about you, dear readers? Am I crazy for wanting to give Idol another chance? Did you stop watching once Taylor Hicks won Season 5? Or are you wearing your Kelly Clarkson T-shirt and tuning in for tonight's 2 hour premiere?

Side Note: The mystery man on the far right of the above picture is not a random production assistant—it is Jimmy Iovine, who will be serving as the contestants' music mentor this season.
