The Joy of 'Being Elmo'

I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of the Independent Film Festival Boston 2011 this week. The evening featured a screening of Being Elmo, a documentary directed by Constance Marks about the life of Kevin Clash, the man who has played Elmo on Sesame Street for over 25 years. It made me smile, laugh and feel like a kid again. It even brought me to tears. And it just may be one of the best movies of the year.

ConDRAGulations: RuPaul Crowns America's Next Drag Superstar

A few days late, I know, but I couldn't let this occasion go by without giving a hearty Condragulations to the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 3. After all, RuPaul is the one who inspired this whole feature to begin with!

So now that the dust has settled from Monday's finale, let's give three cheers to America's Next Drag Superstar.

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't watched the Season 3 Finale yet, stop reading now, go watch it and then come back and participate with the rest of us.

Family Jules: For Richard Stands

Things were too good to be true last week. We had a new Modern Family and the return of Cougar Town with two new episodes in one week. But, alas, ABC giveth and ABC taketh away and the Tucker-Pritchett-Delgado-Dunphys dished out a rerun last night. Thankfully, this week's Cougar Town featured some of my favorite things: Twitter, trivia, the Pledge of Allegiance!

Before I bang my way from A-Ha to ZZ-Top (gross and grosser), let's take a look at last night's best moments...

American Idol, Season 10: Top 6 Song Suggestions

Last week, American Idol made a valiant attempt to prove its contemporary worth with "Music of the 21st Century." And although the only successes in my eyes were Haley Reinhart and James Durbin, I appreciated the effort by the show to move its contestants away from music written before their parents were born.

And then they announced the theme for this week...

Meeting (and Model Walking with) the Fabulous Beekman Boys

I normally don't write about my personal life here—I'm busy enough writing about Project Runway contestants and Oscar nominees and, frankly, they are way more fun—but last night I had a Real Life Adventure that was way too fabulous to ignore.

When I found out that Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge (of The Fabulous Beekman Boys fame) were going to be at the Harvard Coop in Cambridge for a book signing of Josh's bestseller The Bucolic Plague, I knew I had to attend.

What I didn't know was how memorable the adventure would be...

RuPaul's Drag Race, Season 3 - Who Is America's Next Drag Superstar?

Tonight, the successor to Bebe Zahara Benet and Tyra "The Other Tyra" Sanchez will be revealed on the Season 3 finale of RuPaul's Drag Race when the three finalists, Raja, Manila Luzon and Alexis Mateo, battle it out for a $75,000 cash prize and the title America's Next Drag Superstar.

Before the champion is revealed tonight, here's a quick rundown of the pros and cons of each of the remaining queens followed by my final prediction....

Magical Monday Moments: 'The Office' Breaks Into Song

Now in its seventh season, The Office is getting ready to bid farewell to Michael Scott as Steve Carrell's contract ends. I'll save my opinion on whether the show should continue (or whether it should've gone on this long, for that matter) for another time. Today, let's just remember this wonderful moment from the end of last week's episode...

Weird Al Parodies Lady Gaga with "Perform This Way"

The Interwebz were abuzz yesterday about a controversy involving "Weird Al" Yankovic.

When did you ever think you'd read that sentence?

Weird Al, who I am a longtime fan of (and have seen perform live, thankyouverymuch), has been parodying popular music and writing some incredibly funny original music for over 30 years. He's parodied artists such as Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Madonna, Queen and so many more. Not a bad group of artists to be listed amongst.

So with his next album on the horizon, who will be the next artist to add to that illustrious list? Well, Lady Gaga of course! Except it almost didn't happen...

Has this been the best week ever or what?! Not only was Modern Family back with one of the best episodes of the season, but we had TWO new episodes of Cougar Town. The hiatus is over! Family Jules is restored to its former glory!

Both shows were running on all cylinders this week, delivering three more-than-solid episodes and reminding us (as if we needed reminding) that these are two of the funniest shows on television and the 9 o'clock hour on Wednesdays on ABC is one of the best hours of television.

So before I start to pound grape in celebration, let's take a look at the best moments from this week's episodes...

American Idol, Season 10: Top 7 Song Suggestions

It happened. It finally happened.

After five female contestants were voted off in a row (excluding Casey Abrams' save), American Idol finally eliminated one of the guys. Now, that's not to say I wasn't incredibly sad to see Paul McDonald go, but if we're being honest he will do way better for himself when he's not forced to do covers and can start to show off his songwriting skills—make sure you check out his band, The Grand Magnolias, ASAP.

Who would've ever guessed that this would be our Top 7, huh? And after a fairly bland "Songs from the Movies" week that was coupled by maddeningly positive judges, I need to start getting some Idol moments to restore my faith in Season 10.

So, what should the Top 7 sing tonight and what should they avoid?

As always... WARNING: Stop reading now if you want the theme of the week to be a surprise!

Trailer Tuesdays: Summer Rom Coms with Three-Word Titles

Summer movies are right around the corner, which means more and more summer movie trailers are being released every day. And it's hard to not see some of the glaring similarities.

Let's take the upcoming Crazy, Stupid, Love and Love, Marriage, Wedding to illustrate this point.

HIMYM's Cast Takes Over the Theme Song

The familiar montage of "night on the town" photos set to "Hey Beautiful" by The Solids has started over 100 episodes of How I Met Your Mother over its six season span. Last night's episode switched up the formula a bit with hilarious and charming results. Check out the video below...

Magical Monday Moments: Tina Fey's Prayer for Her Daughter

When it comes to books written by celebrities, the results are usually a total hit or a total miss. We have to gauge our expectations, remembering that many of these people are famous for reasons completely separate from their ability to piece a decent sentence together.

Luckily for us, there are people like Tina Fey, whose incredible screenwriting and acting abilities translate brilliantly to hardcover form. I'm currently devouring her book, Bossypants, taking several breaks to laugh my face off. And though I haven't gotten to the chapter yet, Melody Godfred at Write in Color posted this excerpt that had me laughing until I cried, making it the perfect Magical Monday Moment for this week. Special thanks to Andrea from bubbles and banjos for the heads up on this gem.

So here, in all its glory, is Tina Fey's "A Mother’s Prayer for Its Child"...

Family Jules: I Can't Be Satisfied

It's been some time since the last new episode of Modern Family, but this one was worth the wait. School plays, practical jokes and an escort service ad all helped remind me why this show is one of the funniest on television. Now if only it's friend Cougar Town would return already. Oh, that's right... that happens next week! Cougar Town returns Monday, April 18th after Dancing with the Stars, then back to its normal time slot Wednesday, April 20th at 9:30pm/EST.

Can you tell I'm excited?

But before I get ready to get my Penny Can on once again, let's look at the best moments of last night's Modern Family.

American Idol, Season 10: Top 8 Song Suggestions

Many of you probably think the title of this post should just be "Who Cares What the Top 8 Sing Since Pia Is Gone"—and, to some extent, you are right.

Last week's poll confirmed that an overwhelming majority of you thought Stefano should and would go home (32.4% and 56.6% respectively), and only 2 people predicted Pia would be packing her bags. I was shocked, angered and saddened by Pia's elimination last week, and briefly considered the notion of ending my viewing and coverage of American Idol Season 10.

But then I remembered that these Song Suggestion posts are all about giving the contestants the guidance they need to give us the best show possible. With Pia gone, we need these Idols to get all the help they can so this season doesn't suddenly nosedive into Season 9 territory.

So, without further ado, here are my suggestions for the Top 8.

As always... WARNING: Stop reading now if you want the theme of the week to be a surprise!

Magical Monday Moments: Yankees vs. Red Sox, Baldwin vs. Krasinski

I don't really know what's going on around here—last week's Magical Monday Moment was about Wrestlemania, and this week's is about baseball. Thank god RuPaul's Drag Race is on tonight so I can snap out of it.

Cougar Town: Writers vs. Actors, Web Series Finale

Can you believe it? It's April! And you know what that means, right? Spring is here COUGAR TOWN RETURNS SOON!!

Sorry, I'll try to compose myself.

In just 10 short days, Cougar Town returns to ABC in a special, one-time-only post-Dancing with the Stars timeslot on Monday, April 18 at 9:30pm/EST, and then back to its normal timeslot on Wednesday, April 20 at 9:30pm/EST. It's been rough getting through this hiatus, but we have Vulture to thank for giving us the Cougar Town: Writers vs. Actors web series to help get us through it.

This week, they posted the final installment of the series, in which Christa Miller (Ellie) complains that she barely appeared in the web series and therefore should be the one to say good-bye. Watch below and see how it turned out...

American Idol, Season 10: Top 9 - Who's Going Home?

Last night on American Idol, the contestants tackled music by artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some rocked. Some rolled. And some chose songs so predictable and bland, I just fast forwarded through to the next one (hello, Stefano). The Judges' Save and subsequent double elimination are behind us—one Idol is definitely going home tonight.

I'm testing out a new feature here on Please Welcome Your Judges: a poll! Who do you think will go home tonight? And who do you think should? Was Paul's rip-roaring Johny Cash performance in the pimp spot enough to get him out of the Bottom Three? Was Lauren Alaina's attempt to take on Aretha Franklin (and Kelly Clarkson) too tepid to save her? After the jump, cast your vote!

American Idol, Season 10: Top 9 Song Suggestions

Perhaps it's my obsession with So You Think You Can Dance, but there is something that just sounds so nice about "Top 10" to me. Unfortunately (fortunately?) for this season of American Idol, we are skipping right to the Top 9 after last week's double elimination of Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia (who coincidentally had the two most amazing names in the competition).

It's hard not to notice that our Season 10 finalists have been whittled down to six guys and three girls after starting out with more ladies. Haley, Pia and Lauren need to bring the heat tomorrow night in order to start taking these boys down one by one. And my song suggestions are just what the doctor ordered.

As always... WARNING: Stop reading now if you want the theme of the week to be a surprise!

Trailer Tuesdays: Hanna

We are almost out of the woods, dear readers—the post-Oscar slump of February and March is beyond us and before you know it summer movie season will be here, followed by a fall/winter of Oscar season.

Of course, April is an odd month for movies all on its own. There are a lot of pre-summer releases starting to come out with bigger profiles than the aforementioned Movie Dead Zone, but the potential for horrid flop is still there. For this week's Trailer Tuesday, let's look at a movie that looks to be one of the first greats of 2011—Joe Wright's Hanna.

Magical Monday Moments: Snooki Smash

I'm going to take the time to write about two things you won't often read about here on Please Welcome Your Judges: professional wrestling and Snooki. Because isn't that what Magical Monday Moments are all about?

Pixar's Annual April Fool's Day Prankster

When it comes to April Fool's Day, I try to just keep my head down and avoid falling into people's traps. No one wants to be the fool, right?

Of course, it's fun to see what Google is going to put out (this year, if you do a Google search for "Helvetica," everything on the site becomes Comic Sans) and there are always a few great pranks out there, like last year when Joel McHale took over

Turns out, the folks at Pixar Animation are no strangers to April Fool's Day trickery. Animator Tia Krattor has quit the studio every year on April 1st. But it wouldn't be like Pixar to just tell the story—today, they posted a delightful animated short telling Tia's story. Check out the video below...
