Family Jules: Ew. It's Merlot.

This week marked the end of the 2010-2011 television season, which meant saying goodbye to our beloved Modern Family and Cougar Town.

Modern Family felt less like a finale and more like a regular (hilarious) episode, with the exception of Alex's home video footage that gave us a "behind the scenes" look at some of the season's highlights: Mitchell practicing for the flash mob, Cam putting on Fizbo makeup, Gloria squawking like a parrot, etc. Cougar Town, on the other hand, went all out and had a mega Hawaiian vacation to finish up its fantastic second season. Two different approaches, two great endings.

Before I invent a Knock Language, let's look at the best moments from the Season 2 finales (and then a little bit of housekeeping about Season 3)...

Modern Family
Season 2, Episode 24: "The One That Got Away"
The family prepares for Jay's birthday, even though he just wants to spend it fishing. Cam assists Manny get better at sports (and decides he wants another kid!), Phil convinces his nemesis that Gloria is his wife, and Mitchell and Claire get stuck in a tree house after trying to recreate a picture from their childhood.
"Permission to come aboard." - Mitchell, who was able to find a sailor outfit very easily.

"Hip Hip Hooray! Save the extra hip, You'll need it someday!" - The card Phil got for Jay ('cuz he's old).

"I have a tennis racquet upstairs I only use as a bubble-bath frothier." - Manny, who has only used his glove once, to take a tort out of the oven, and his baseball bat to roll out dough.

"He didn't stop for the screaming sailor in a tree?!" - Claire, who is an expert at opening wine bottles with only a shoe and a hard surface.

"Ew. It's Merlot." - Mitchell, who thinks pool hopping made going in Grandma's pool less special.
(We Will Never Stop Mocking the Title...) Cougar Town
Season 2, Episode 21: "Something Good Coming"
Travis decides to move to Hawaii, and the Cul-De-Sac Crew follows him to bring him back. Bobby pairs up with Ellie and Andy and starts to feel lonely without a "plus one," and Jules and Grayson have serious talks about their future with (or without) children.
"No one who says coolio is cool. That's why Coolio is named Coolio." - Laurie, whose mom stole her hair and sold it to a doll factory.

"He's trying to jumpstart my uterus." - Jules, who either gets the chills or gets felt up by ghosts and who thinks Condom Hunt would make a great TV show.

"We're all excited. Laurie made that clear on the plane when she stripped down to her bra because she said it looked like a bikini. It doesn't!" - Ellie, who accurately predicted her gorgeous hotelroom view being blocked by a shirtless fat man.

"I taught everyone Penny Can, except here we use a coconut and a rock." - Travis King Ne'er-Do-Well explaining the rules of CocoRock.

"How can it be one time here and one time there? This isn't Star Trek!" - Bobby, who wants to be "inside friends" with Andy.

"Brush your teeth / Wash your face / Check your nose just in case / Eat your breakfast / Bacon and eggers / Take your pill so you won’t get preggers!" - Grayson, inventor of the word "gagbysmal."

And, of course, a special shout out to Danny Pudi, aka Abed on Community, for his cameo.
Now, some thoughts on Season 3 and its implications around these parts...

Next season's schedule is a bit different. While Modern Family remains at 9/8c on Wednesdays, the current Cougar Town slot is being filled by (my new favorite) Happy Endings and the Cul-De-Sac Crew is being moved to Tuesdays at 9/8c, airing between seasons of Dancing with the Stars. So while Modern Family will return in September, we will have to wait until the end of November for Season 3 of Cougar Town. But never fear! As they showed during the mid-season hiatus, the Cougar Town crew loves to keep us engaged and will most likely come out with more bonus content in the early fall.

So what does that mean for the future of these Family Jules posts? Well, to be honest, it's a bit unclear. I have a few options to consider:
  1. Stay with the current format highlighting Modern Family and Cougar Town, posting toward the end of the week, and if one of the shows happens to not have a new episode, so be it (or highlight extra content like this season's Cougar Town: Writers vs. Actors web series).
  2. Do away with Family Jules and write two separate posts: one for Modern Family and one for Cougar Town. Perhaps include Happy Endings into the Modern Family post and come up with a new name (Happy Family?).
  3. Incorporate Happy Endings into the current Family Jules format, which would require a new name (Happy Family Jules?).
What say you, dear readers? Which option should I choose? Are you going to miss these shows over the summer? And what did you think of both shows' Season 2?
