I have been dancing around my desk all day today. And it's not because Scotty McCreery won American Idol last night. No, no—it's because tonight, after months and months of waiting, So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 finally preimeres!!!
It's felt like a particularly long time since we last joined Cat, Nigel and the gang, especially considering that Season 5, 6 and 7 all occurred within an incredibly short amount of time. But the wait will certainly be worth it, as it always is with SYTYCD.
But before it's a "yes to choreography," here are some details you should know about the upcoming season...
As previously reported, there are many changes coming to Season 8, the most exciting of which is the return of Mary Murphy following her (successful) battle with throat cancer over the course of the past year. Mary will be rejoining Nigel as a permanent judge, and the third judge's seat (occupied in Seasons 6 and 7 by my twin, Adam Shankman) will return to being a rotating guest judge. So far they have announced the following guest judges: Robin Antin, Lil C, Tyce Diorio, Toni Redpath and Jason Gilkison. And rumor has it Debbie Allen will be returning as well (yayyy!).
Though the All-Star format is returning, it has been slightly modified to create "the best of both worlds." As in Seasons 1-6, a Top 20 will be chosen at the end of Vegas Week. These 20 dancers will be paired up and each week two dancers will be sent home. Once the field has been narrowed down to 10 dancers, a crop of All-Stars will be added into the mix to partner up with the remaining dancers, similar to the format of Season 7. I love this new method—it will allow us to really get to know the new dancers before they are thrown in with our favorites from seasons past. Because let's be honest, when Twitch was in a routine, did you really watch the competing dancer??
And in case you were wondering how long you'll have to wait before the live shows and voting begins, here is the schedule for the next few weeks:
Thursday, May 26th: Atlanta & Bay Area Auditions (2 Hours)My regular recaps will probably not begin until the Meet the Top 20 show on June 9th, though I may pop in every once in a while if there is a particularly fantastic audition or piece of news.
Wednesday, June 1st: New York & Salt Lake City Auditions (2 Hours)
Thursday, June 2nd: Los Angeles Auditions (1 hour)
