2011 Emmy Predictions: Supporting Actors
Big wheel keep on turning... Emmy predictions keep on burning.
Predicting who/what the TV Academy will vote for is a seemingly impossible task. They always seem to snub some of the most deserving nominees and go for some puzzling choices, but let's try to reason with the crazies anyway. All this week, I'll be breaking down my predictions in each of the major acting and series categories, finishing it off with my full predictions ballot at the end of the week.
Yesterday I broke down my predictions for the Supporting Actresses. Now let's move on to the nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Chris Colfer, Glee
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Last year Modern Family took up half of this category and this year, while many believed Ed O'Neill would come and replace one of his co-stars, the show accounts for two-thirds of the nominees leaving only room for 2009 winner Jon Cryer and Glee's Chris Colfer. And while you could argue that O'Neill and Burrell might be better served in the Lead Actor category, them's the breaks. In any case, I'd love to see Colfer honored. He has taken Kurt Hummel above and beyond anyone's expectations and is now a cultural icon. Unfortunately, I think that's only a possibility if the Modern Family men split the vote between last year's winner Eric Stonestreet, O'Neill and Burrell (sorry, Jesse!). The split didn't happen last year, and I'd wager that the Academy puts all their votes behind Burrell for the win. No matter what happens, Parks & Recreation's Nick Offerman should be on the ballot—and winning.
Should Win: Chris Colfer, Glee
Will Win: Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Should Have Been Nominated: Nick Offerman, Parks & Recreation
Andre Braugher, Men of a Certain Age
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Walton Goggins, Justified
John Slaterry, Mad Men
Like yesterday's drama category, this is one in which I'm not wholly familiar with all of the shows/performances. Peter Dinklage emerged as the unlikely heart, soul and humor of Game of Thrones in its inaugural season and is probably the show's only chance at a major Emmy win, though he is up against some seasoned veterans and critical favorites. Andre Braugher and Alan Cumming are Academy sweethearts and Walton Goggins is long overdue for this nomination. Throw in a consistently superb actor like John Slattery and this race is pretty much anyone's for the taking.
Should Win: Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Will Win: Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Should Be Nominated: Denis O'Hare, True Blood
Who do you think should and will take home the Emmy in these two categories, and who was snubbed out of a nomination? Don't forget to come back tomorrow when I boldly predict the winners in the lead actress categories.
