2012 Oscar Predictions: Animation
As we countdown to the 84th Annual Academy Awards, I'll be breaking down my predictions in the nine "major" categories. Who will win, who should win, who could win and who deserved to nominated—it's all here.
Since some of the categories ahead have serious neck-and-neck races, let's start the week off with an easy one. Keep reading for my predictions for Best Animated Feature Film...
A Cat in Paris
Chico & Rita
Kung Fu Panda 2
Puss in Boots
After years of Pixar domination, the studio was shutout following the lukewarm reception of Cars 2, an especially noteworthy (and embarrassing) event considering the field of nominees expanding to five after last year's three. This is the major category I've seen the least of—A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita aren't readily available in the US, Puss in Boots isn't on DVD until the 24th—but it's pretty much accepted knowledge that Rango is the clear winner here. It was absolutely not my cup of tea—I found it too bizarre and too boring at the same time—but there's no denying the superb animation work at hand. Still, I wish the animators would've given The Adventures of Tintin a chance. Yes, the work originated with live-action camera work, but the finished product was a stunning and exciting piece of animation.
Will Win: Rango
Could Win: Puss in Boots
Should Win: Rango
Should've Been Nominated: The Adventures of Tintin
I'll be back tomorrow with my predictions in Original and Adapted Screenplay. In the meantime, don't forget to enter the 2012 Please Welcome Your Judges Oscar Contest!
