As someone who grew up in a New York Giants household, last night's Super Bowl was truly an exciting one. I went to school in Boston and work for a Boston company, so there's an added joy in watching the Giants defeat the New England Patriots for the second time in four years. But while my focus for much of the night was on the likes of Eli Manning and Mario Manningham, I still made sure to stay on the couch when it was time for the commercials.
Overall, I wasn't nearly as impressed by the ad agency offerings this year than I have in years past. Heck, it was just one year ago that we all fell in love with that adorable little guy dressed as Darth Vader. The commercials this year seemed either forced, lame, pushed too far or, in the consistent case of GoDaddy.com, just plain terrible. Still, to every rule there are exceptions, and last night offered up a few glittering gems of magical advertising moments, from determined dogs and fearless cars to yogurt fights and talking babies.
So without further ado, here are the best commercials from Super Bowl XLVI...
NBC: "Brotherhood of Man"
While NBC was clearly putting all of its Super Bowl eggs in the baskets of The Voice and Smash, it was nice to see all of the network's other great (and low-rated) shows get some loving, too. From Liz Lemon's nacho plate to Ron Swanson's big thumbs down and Donald Trump's thankfully short appearance, this was a great way to promote NBC shows. Except, of course, that they didn't put the names and schedules for those shows as a caption at the bottom. They really Britta'ed that one Ugh.
Love the song ("We Are Young" by Fun ft. Janelle Monáe), love the use of OK Go, and I love all the stunts the Sonic did. Definitely in the Top 2 of the night.
Volkswagen: "The Dog Strikes Back"
An adorable fitness dog. Doesn't really get much better than that. Love all the creative ways they came up with for the dog to exercise and I'm glad he could finally fit through that door! This would've been at the very top of the list had it not been for the stupid tag ending.
H&M: "David Beckham Bodywear"
Do I really need to explain why this is on the list?
I've never been a big fan of the talking babies in the E*Trade commercials, but I've never laughed at one as much as I did last night after "I'm speed dating!"
Dannon Oikos: "The Tease"
John Stamos getting head-butted? Yup. I'm in.
Best Buy: "Mobile Phone Game Changer
I'm not going to lie. I'm only including this for the Words with Friends plane gag.
Fiat: "The Fiat 500 Abarth"
A perfect example of brand personification.
Which ads were you favorites of the night? Did you love the exercising dog and sky-diving car as much as I did? And do you think anyone actually likes those GoDaddy commercials?! Sound off in the comments!
